Abstract

1,247,980. Cleaning copper alloys. OLIN CORP. Nov. 5, 1969 [Jan. 6, 1969], No. 54269/69. Heading C7E. Cu-based alloys are cleaned by immersion in an aqueous alkaline solution of pH > 10 at 100‹F. to the boiling-point for at least 2 seconds, followed by immersion in an aqueous mineral acid solution at 75‹F. -200‹F. for 2 seconds to 5 minutes, said acid solution having a pH equal to that of an H 2 SO 4 solution of 3-50% by volume. The Cu-based alloy may contain Al, and have a coating of complex oxide, e.g. containing Al 2 O 3 . The alkaline solution may be KOH, LiOH, or preferably NaOH, and the acid may be H 2 SO 4 , HCl, or HNO 3 , optionally containing Na 2 Cr 2 O 7 , e.g. in amounts of 1 to 8 oz. per gallon.
