Abstract
1,245,253. Cleaning aluminium. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. Oct. 30, 1968 [Nov. 1, 1967], No. 51392/68. Heading C7E. A surface containing Al or an Al alloy is cleaned by a method comprising the steps of contacting the surface with a first aqueous solution containing dichromate ions and sulphate ions, and then with a second aqueous solution containing a reducing agent having an oxidation potential of up to 1À3 volt subsequent to the step of contacting the surface with the said first solution. The said first solution contains 0À1 to 10 wt per cent of Na 2 Cr 2 O 7 or K 2 Cr 2 O 7 or 0À1 to 20 wt per cent of CrO 3 , in each case there being 10 to 50 wt per cent conc. H 2 SO 4 added, and contacting takes place at 70 to 150 F. for 2 to 20 minutes, and the second solution may be a 0À1 to 10 wt per cent aqueous solution of ferrous sulphate, sodium sulphate, sodium bisulphite, or sodium thiosulphate, the second contacting taking place within an hour of the first, at 70 to 150 F. for up to 60 seconds. Prior to the above-mentioned steps, the Al may be subjected to one or more of the following: - degreasing, sandblasting, cleaning with one or more of sodium metasilicate, trisodium phosphate, sodium borate, or an alkyl aryl polyether alcohol, or cleaning with HNO 3 /H 3 PO 4 .
