Abstract
1504494 Coating aluminium with zirconium containing solution PYRENE CHEMICAL SERVICES Ltd 26 Jan 1977 [26 Jan 1976] 03123/77 Heading C7U Al or Al alloy surfaces are coated by treating with an aqueous alkaline solution containing Zr ions and a complexing agent. The solution pH is preferably 10-14, the Zr ion concentration 0À01-10 g/l and the complexing agent is preferably hexahydroxyheptonic acid, sodium gluconate, sodium heptogluconate or sodium edetate. The coated surface is preferably water rinsed and then treated with an aqueous acidic solution pH 1À5-6 containing 0À1-50 g/l tannin or tannic acid. Suitable Zr compounds in the alkaline solution are Li 2 ZrF 6 , Na 2 ZrF 6 , K 2 ZrF 6 , (NH 4 ) 2 ZrF 6 , ZrOSo 4 , Zr(SO 4 ) 2 , Zr (OH) 4 , ZrCl 4 and Zr acetate. The acid solution may include phosphoric, boric, polyphosphoric, phystic, HF, hydro-silicofluoric, borofluoric acids, their alkali metal salts, Ti hydrofluoride and zirconium hydrofluoride.
