Abstract

1505635 Coating aluminium with titanium solutions and tannin or tannic acid PYRENE CHEMICAL SERVICES Ltd 26 Jan 1977 [26 Jan 1976] 03124/77 Heading C7U Al or Al alloy surfaces are coated by treating with an aqueous alkaline solution containing Ti ions and a complexing agent, rinsing with water and then treating with an aqueous acid solution containing tannin or tannic acid. The pH of the alkaline solution may be 10-14, the Ti ion concentration 0À01-10g/l and the complexing agent is preferably hexahydroxyheptonic acid, sodium gluconate, sodium heptogluconate or sodium edetate. The pH of the acid solution may be 1À5-6 with a tannin or tannic acid concentration of 0À1-50g/l. Suitable Ti compounds in the alkaline solution are H 2 TiF 6 , Li 2 TiF 6 , Na 2 TiF 6 , K 2 TiF 6 , (NH 4 ) 2 TiF 6 , TiOSO 4 , Ti(SO 4 ) 2 , Ti(SO 4 ) 3 , Ti(OH) 4 and TiCl 4 . The acid solution may include phosphoric, boric, polyphosphoric, phytic, HF, hydrosilicofluoric, borufluoric acids, then alkali metal salts, Ti hydrofluoride and Zr hydro fluoride.
