Abstract

A decorative, protective, coloured oxide coating is produced on an aluminium or aluminium-base alloy article by anodizing it in an aqueous electrolyte comprising:- (a) 4-sulphophthalic and/or 5-sulphoisophthalic acid, preferably at least 10 e.g. 70-130 g/l; and (b) sulphuric acid and/or water soluble sulphate and/or bisulphate, preferably at least 1 and less than 20 g/l (calculated as H2SO4). The ratio of compounds (a) to (b) is preferably at least 7. The electrolyte is preferably maintained at between 40 and 110 DEG F. Using either A.C. or D.C., the current density may be between 9 and 144 A.S.F. Sulphates or bisulphates used may be those of an alkali metal e.g. Na, a heavy metal e.g. Fe, ammonium, an organic compound e.g. aniline, or hydrazine. Prior to anodizing, the aluminium surface may be etched or brightened, and the coating produced may be sealed, dyed or pigmented.
