Abstract

Aluminium or aluminium alloy surfaces are plated with a metal, e.g. Ni or Cr, after anodizing the surface electrolytically using an aqueous mixture of H3PO4 and H2SO4. A solution containing 5-45% by volume of H3PO4 and 1-30% of H2SO4 is used at 80-140 DEG F. and at 12-120 A.S.F. for 1-30 minutes. The aluminium is preferably pre-cleaned with alkali solution and etched in weak sulphuric acid. Examples include plating with Ni, Cr or a combination of these with a chromium top coat, applied to aluminium and a range of aluminium alloys.
