Wear resistance of chromium plated metal surfaces is improved by pre-treating the metal surface with an aqueous solution containing boracic acid 0.01%, sulphuric acid 40.00%, fluosilicic acid 8.00-23.00%, fluoboracic acid 10.00%; and applied at a temperature of 20‹ C., a current density of 50 to 100 Š/dm.<SP>2</SP> and for 5 to 25 minutes. The metal surface is then coated with hard chromium formed electrolytically.
