Abstract
812,338. Electrodeposition of chromium. METAL & THERMIT CORPORATION. Aug. 2, 1955 [Aug. 12, 1954], No. 22187/55. Class 41. Crack-free chromium is electroplated on to a metal, e.g. steel article at a cathode current density of 0.5 to 8 amps./square inch at a temperature of 140‹ F. to the boiling point of the plating bath which contains 200 to 900 g./l. CrO 3 , 0.3 to 5.5 g./l. SO 4 <SP>11</SP> and 1.0 to 11.4 g./l. SiF 6 <SP>11</SP> without the addition of compounds suppressing the ionization of the catalyst radical compounds which are present to give a combined concentration (SO 4 <SP>11</SP> + SiF 6 <SP>11</SP>) of from 1.5 to 11.7 g./l. which varies with CrO 3 concentration as indicated by the area ABCD of the accompanying graph. The preferred operating concentrations, temperatures and current densities are substantially the same as those specified in Specification 771,925. The sulphate-supplying compound may be sulphuric acid or sodium, potassium, chromium, calcium or strontium sulphates while the silicofluoride supplying compound may be hydrofluosilicic acid or magnesium, sodium or potassium silicofluorides. Specification 697,786 also is referred to.
