Abstract

696,455. Electrolytic production of aluminium. ALUMINUM CO. OF AMERICA. July 11, 1951 [July 14, 1950], No. 16419/51. Class 41. In the production of aluminium, alumina is reduced by electrolysis at an operating temperature between 890‹ and 960‹ C. in a cell having a carbon anode, the alumina being dissolved in a fused salt bath consisting essentially of sodium fluoride, aluminium fluoride and sodium chloride, the sodium chloride constituting between 9 and 30 per cent by weight of the compounds, and the ratio by weight of sodium fluoride to aluminium fluoride being between 1.1 to 1 and 1.8 to 1. The alumina content of the electrolyte may range from about 0.4 per cent of the essential components of the bath up to the limit of solubility of the alumina therein.
