Abstract

772,290. Electrolytic etching of tantalum. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Dec. 15, 1953 [Dec. 17, 1952], No. 34927/53. Class 41. Tantalum is etched by making it the anode in an electrolytic bath consisting of a solution of an inorganic halide in formamide containing from 9.500 to 11.500 parts by weight of water per million parts of solution. The solution may also contain dimethyl formamide and the halide may be ammonium bromide, fluoride or bifluoride, potassium bromide, sodium iodide, nickel, lithium or ferris chloride or lead, calcium, sodium, copper or beryllium fluoride. The current density should lie within the range of 5-50 amps per sq. ft.; and the temperature should lie within the range of 20-65‹ C. In examples, tantalum foil electrodes were immersed as the anode in solutions of ammonium bifluoride in formamide or in a mixture of formamide and dimethyl formamide.
