Abstract

691,509. Electrolytic etching; electrolytic condensers. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Aug. 21, 1951 [Aug. 29, 1950], No. 19697/51. Classes 37 and 41. Tantalum is etched in order to provide an increased effective area when used as a capacitor electrode by treatment as anode in an electrolyte comprising ;at least 6.5 per cent by weight of methanol, a trace of water and a methanolsoluble inorganic halide. Methanol may constitute the sole organic solvent tor may be admixed with other organic solvents ;such as ethylene glycol, ethyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, nitrobenzene, glycerine, diethylene glycol monoethyl ether, or formamide. The inorganic halide is preferably a fluoride, e.g. ammonium fluoride or bifluoride, or fluoride of lead, calcium, sodium, copper or beryllium; it should be present in amount sufficient to permit passage of a current. Other ;suitable halides are nickel chloride, lithium chloride, calcium chloride, potassium bromide and sodium iodide. The concentration of ammonium fluoride may be 1.3-4.1 per cent or of ammonium bifluoride 0.62-6.1 per cent; mixtures of these salts may be used. The water content of the solution may be 3.000- 50,000 parts .by weight per million. The ratio of the effective area of the surface produced by the etching to the projected area may be 1.5-6.5 or more. A ratio of 6.65 was obtained by using a solution containing 58 per cent methanol, 39.8 per cent ethylene glycol and 2.2 per cent ammonium bifluoride with about 4200 parts per million of water at 20-25‹ C. The temperature of the solution may be 20- 65‹C.; the lower temperatures in this range are employed when a low voltage is to be employed in the subsequent treatment to develop a dielectric film on the surface. The capacitator may comprise tantalum strips 10, 11 etched in accordance with.the invention and separated by strips 12, 13, 14, 15 of paper or other porous insulating material, all wound into a compact roll for impregnation with a suitable-electrolyte before or after insertion in a container. Terminal straps 17, 18 are fixed to the respective strips and extend through insulating plugs at either end of the container.
