Abstract

702,877. Electrolytic etching ; electric condensers. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. June 3, 1952 [July 11, 1951], No. 13966/52. Addition to 691,509. Classes 37 and 41 A tantalum surface is etched to provide a higher effective surface area when employed as a capacitor electrode by' treatment as anode in an electrolyte comprising methanol, a trace of water and sufficient ammonium bromide dissolved therein to permit passage of a current. By the selection of ammonium bromide as the halide component the permissible water content is less critical and may be in the range of 6,000-135,000 parts per million. Ammonium bromide may be used together with calcium chloride; a suitable bath contains by weight 3.5 per cent. calcium chloride, 3.5 per cent. ammonium bromide and 93 per cent. methanol together with 5.9-135 millilitres of water per litre of solution. Etch ratios as high as 6.5 may be obtained.
