Abstract

928,820. Capacitors; anodising aluminium and other metals. TELEGRAPH CONDENSER CO. Ltd. (Sprague Electric Co.). Nov. 30, 1960, No. 41124/60. Classes 37 and 41. An electrolytic capacitor has a cathode, an oxide coated anode of valve metal (e.g. aluminium, tantalum, niobium or their combinations), which may take the form of an etched foil; immersed in an electrolyte of which the solvent comprises a five-membered heterocyclic ring compound having an oxygen atom as one heteroatom ring member and a double bond oxygen atom attached to a carbon atom of the ring, and in which a hydrogen atom attached to a carbon atom of the ring may be substituted by a monovalent alkyl or arylkyl radical. The solvent may be propylene carbonate, gammavalerolactone, or butyrolactone either alone or mixed with other solvents, and the ionizable solute may be a substituted ammonium salt e.g. benzyl, triethyl ammonium chloride, phenyl dimethyl allyl ammonium iodide, or may be a condensed alkyl polyphosphate salt reacted from trimethylamine, phosphorus oxide and methanol for solution in the propylene carbonate electrolyte. Borates and phosphates may be added thereto.
