Abstract

933,937. Electrolyte capacitors. TELEGRAPH CONDENSER CO. Ltd. Jan. 4, 1961, No. 308/61. Class 37. A non-pressure producing electrolyte which does not give off gas, particularly hydrogen, when used in an electrolytic capacitor includes as salts compounds having ammonium (particularly a quaternary ammonium salt) phosphonoim arsonium and stibonium cations, the cation having the formula where R 1 is an organic radical selected from the group consisting of phenyl and alkyl radicals up to C 4 , R 2 is an alkyl radical up to C 4 , R 3 is a radical selected from the group consisting of allyl, benzyl, substituted allyl and benzyl and X is an element selected from the group consisting of nitrogen, arsenic, phosphorus and antimony. Cations specifically mentioned are allyl dimethyl anilinium, allyl trimethyl ammonium, benzyl trimethyl ammonium, benzyl dimethyl anilinium, cinnamyl triethyl ammonium. The anion may be a borate. Aluminium and platinium cathodes are referred to. The cinnamyl radical is referred to as being particularly stable on the discharge of a cation containing it from an electrolyte at the cathode. Either aqueous or ethylene glycol solutions may be used for the electrolyte.
