Abstract

1,196,867. Capacitor electrolytes. SIEMENS A.G. 4 Sept., 1968 [5 Sept., 1967], No. 42009/68. Heading H1M. An electrolyte for an electrolytic capacitor having aluminium electrodes comprises, per mol. of boric acid, 1À0 to 3À5 mols glycol, 0À0 to 0À35 mols. ammonia, 0À03 to 025 mols. sodium, 0À04 to 0À35 mols sorbitol and/or mannitol and up to 3À0 mols of water. Alternatively up to 1À2 mols water may be removed from the mixed constituents. Preferably the electrolyte is made up by boiling the boric acid, glycol, sodium (in the form of sodium hydroxide) and water until the desired water content is reached, and adding ammonia at least partially in the form of a glycollic solution, e.g. as a mixture of ammonia-rich glycol and ammonium borate. Capacitors can be impregnated with the electrolyte at comparatively low temperatures, e.g. room temperature, so that changes in composition due to evaporation are minimized, without crystallization taking place. The electrolyte may also contain phosphoric acid.
