Abstract
388,462. Electrolytic condensers. AEROVOX WIRELESS CORPORATION, 70, Washington Street, Brooklyn, New York, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Georgiev, A.; 70, Washington Street, Brooklyn, New York, U.S.A.) Sept. 25, 1931, No. 26766. Convention date, Dec. 9, 1930. [Class 37.] An electrolyte for electrolytic cells such as electrolytic condensers comprises a solution containing one or more borates of a polyhydroxy alcohol such as glycerol and/or an alkali salt thereof obtained by boiling together constituents such as boracic acid, a polyhydroxy alcohol, and an element yielding an alkaline salt, e.g. ammonia. Ammonium or other alkali metal salt of glyceryl borate alone or admixed with glyceryl borate itself forms an electrolyte prepared by boiling, and continuing boiling at 130‹ C. for five minutes, a mixture of ammonia water or gas, glycerol and boric acid in stated proportions. The viscosity of the resulting liquid is maintained at between 3-4À5 as compared with that of water at 60‹ F. by thinning liquids such as methanol, acetone, methyl alcohol or water. The electrolyte is absorbed into the gauze interlay of a pre-wound condenser impregnated as disclosed in Specification 379,299. The tetra-borate may replace the borate and any polyhydroxy alcohol such as glycol, glucose, &c. may be used. The ammonia and boric acid may be replaced by sodium, potassium or other alkali metal borate.
