Abstract

671,809. Electrolytic condensers. PLESSEY CO., Ltd. July 27, 1950 [July 30, 1949], No. 18799/50. Class 37. An electrolytic condenser comprises a cathode of metal of the silver-copper group, an anode of tantalum and an electrolyte, e.g. sulphuric acid, so that during the passage of A.C. the electrolyte dissolves ions from the cathode in the positive half-cycle, and redeposits them on the cathode during the negative half - cycle. In an embodiment, the anode 11, of porous tantalum, is supported between rubber stoppers 16, 51, 52 centrally in a cylindrical, sealed, copper can 14, whose inner surface is coated with silver 12. The can is filled with an immobilized electrolyte, e.g. sulphuric acid in gel form, as produced by the addition of silica gel. A layer of dialysing paper (not shown) may be used to line the inside of the cathode to prevent dissipation of the dissolved metal throughout the electrolyte.
