Abstract

Metals of which the sulphides are soluble in aqueous alkali metal sulphide solutions are extracted electrolytically from aqueous alkali metal sulphide solutions of sulphides of said metals using an anode comprising an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal amalgam. The metals extracted are typically As, Sb, Sn, Au, Hg, Pt, & W. The cell employed may be divided into two compartments by a porous diaphragm of ceramic or synthetic material and the anode compartment contains a solution of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal sulphide, while the cathode compartment contains the sulphide solution of the metal to be extracted, e.g. sodium thioantimonite or thiostannate or Hg S in sodium or potassium sulphide. If the anolyte is sodium sulphide sodium amalgam is used as anode, while potassium amalgam is used with potassium sulphide. The level of the anolyte is maintained above that of the catholyte to cause a flow of alkali metal sulphide into the cathode compartment. The process, which is self exciting when an external electrical connection is made between the electrodes, may be assisted by an externally applied voltage. The cathode may be Pt and the amalgam anode may include a vertical iron disc dipping into an amalgam pool and rotatable on a horizontal axis above the pool.
