Abstract
894,725. Electrolytic capacitors; anodizing metals. HUNT (CAPACITORS) Ltd., A. H. July 28, 1960 [Aug. 13, 1959; Jan. 7, 1960], Nos. 27748/59 and 649/60. Classes 37 and 41. An electrolytic capacitor contains a silver cathode electrode which bears on its electrolyte-contacting face a thin adherent film of silver oxide or peroxide with or without silver halide (e.g. Ag Br) in addition, the film preferably containing at least 15% oxide ; the capacitor anode may comprise filmed tantalum. The adherent film of the silver electrode, which may be silver foil with the film on both faces as in a semi-wet type of capacitor, a silver container coated on its inside with the film as in a wet type of capacitor, or silver gauze, may be formed electrolytically by making the electrode, either the silver foil or the silver container of the bath, the anode during the electrolysis therein of an aqueous solution of an alkali metal (e.g. Na or K) carbonate, bicarbonate or hydroxide, or ammonium carbonate or hydroxide, or mixtures thereof, with or without a soluble halide (e.g. NaBr), using a current density of not more than 20 m.a./sq. inch. Examples of baths are (i) 10% Na2CO3 + 2% NaCl; and (ii) 200 g/l. KOH + 30 g/l. KBr.
