Abstract
712,601. Electrolytic production of uranium tetrafluoride. LORD PRESIDENT OF THE COUNCIL. Oct. 13, 1944, [Oct, 15, 1943.] No. 17007/43. Class 41. Uranium tetrafluoride is made by submitting to electrolysis an aqueous solution of uranyl fluoride containing free HF. The uranyl fluoride may be obtained by dissolving uranium hexafluoride in water. At temperatures not above 40‹C., UF 4 .H 2 O predominates, while at above 60‹C. the product is 2 UF 4 . 5 H 2 O. A liquid cathode such as mercury may be used and the electrolyte is agitated.
