Abstract

Germanium tetrachloride is obtained from an aqueous solution containing fluogermanic acid, by adding an excess of ammonia to obtain a precipitate which is separated, and distilling germanium tetrachloride from a mixture of the precipitate and hydrochloric acid. The solution of fluogermanic acid may be a solution obtained in the etching of germanium with an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide and hydrofluoric acid. The germanium tetrachloride may be hydrolysed with water to germanium dioxide, and the germanium dioxide may be reduced to germanium by heating in hydrogen. An example is given.
