Abstract

Germanium tetrachloride is obtained from an aqueous solution containing alkali metal germanates, by adding hydrochloric, nitric or sulphuric acid to bring the pH to below 7, adding excess ammonia to form a precipitate, separating the precipitate and distilling germanium tetrachloride from a mixture of the precipitate and hydrochloric acid. The solution of alkali metal germanate may be a solution obtained in the etching of germanium with an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide and potassium hydroxide, or sodium hypochlorite and sodium hydroxide, or in the electrolytic etching of germanium with an aqueous solution of potassium or sodium hydroxide. The germanium tetrachloride may be hydrolysed with water to germanium dioxide, and the germanium dioxide may be reduced to germanium by heating in hydrogen. An example is given.
