Abstract
Titanium, zirconium, and alloys in which these metals predominate are pickled in an aqueous solution containing hydrofluoric acid, nitric acid, and one or more of alkali metal p or ammonium salts in which chlorine is present in the anion, and hydrogen peroxide (or a per-compound which splits off hydrogen peroxide in acidic solution). The alkali metal or ammonium salts may be sodium, potassium and ammonium chloride, sodium and potassium chlorate, and sodium and potassium hypochlorite. In a modification, nitric acid is omitted from the solution: in this case chlorides are not used.
