Abstract

Ta, Nb and Si values are removed from tin slag containing these and other impurities by comminuting the slag and treating it with HCl, preferably hot HCl, the insoluble residue containing Ta, Nb and Si values is separated and treated with HF or a solution of an acid fluoride, e.g. a solution of an alkali metal hydrogen fluoride or ammonium hydrogen fluoride, to dissolve the silica and to leave an insoluble product containing Nb2O5 and Ta2O5.
