Abstract

Titanium is produced by reaction of titanium tetrachloride with sodium and is isolated from the reaction product by leaching in an aqueous solution, the sodium used for reduction having been treated at above its melting point prior to reaction to remove hydrogen-contamination therefrom. Hydrogen removal may be effected by filtering the molten sodium through steel wool in an inert atmosphere, by heating at over 200 DEG C. in the presence of a metal such as titanium, zirconium or an alkaline earth metal which forms a hydride at that temperature and then filtering the molten sodium, by heating under reduced pressure at above 98 DEG C. to evolve the hydrogen or by distilling the sodium under reduced pressure in a stream of inert gas.
