Abstract

A process for the production of titanium comprises reducing titanium tetrachloride with metallic sodium and maintaining the titanium product at a temperature above 800 DEG C., e.g. 850-900 DEG C., for at least 15 minutes, the entire process being effected in an atmosphere inert to the titanium. The high temperature treatment may take place in the presence of the sodium chloride formed in the reaction and which thus supplies at least a part of the heat required for maintaining the temperature. The resulting titanium sponge is less susceptible to attack by air or water during subsequent operations.
