Abstract
Titanium dioxide is reduced to a lower oxide by means of magnesium and the lower oxide reduced to the metal by means of calcium, both reduction steps taking place in an inert atmosphere, e.g. argon or helium. The steps may take place at temperatures of 550-565 DEG C and 700-1000 DEG C respectively. After the first stage, magnesium and magesium oxide may be removed by treatment with a 5-10 per cent solution of hydrochloric acid; the final product may be treated similarly. Alternatively, acetic acid or ammonium chloride solution may be used.
