Abstract
Ferrous chloride crystals used for the production of iron powder are produced from liquor, e.g., spent pickle liquor which usually contains free hydrochloric acid by neutralising the liquor with scrap iron or other reagent such as ammonia or iron hydroxide and recovering the chloride as crystals from the liquor by spray drying or evaporation and crystallisation. The crystals are obtained in the dihydrate or tetrahydrate forms or a mixture of these hydrates, the preferred form being the dihydrate which is produced directly by crystallisation at above 70 DEG C. or by rapid drying of the tetra-hydrate which is provided at temperatures below 70 DEG C.ALSO:Iron powder is produced by subjecting ferrous chloride crystals to heat treatment at 500-600 DEG C. in a reducing atmosphere of hydrogen, bringing the iron powder so produced into intimate association with water to remove unreduced material, e.g. by milling it in the presence of water and then densifying the powder by heat-treatment in a reducing or non-oxidizing atmosphere at 600-850 DEG C.
