Abstract
Alkali metal zirconates are obtained from a zirconium silicate ore such as zircon, by adding an alkali metal hydroxide to said ore and heating the mixture in the presence of a preformed alkali metal zirconate, the alkali metal being added at a rate p insufficient to form a melt. The reaction may be conducted in a fluidized bed maintained by a stream of air, nitrogen or other gas inert to the hydroxide, zircon and alkali metal hydroxide being added to the bed whilst the resultant frit is withdrawn therefrom. A rotary calciner in which the mixture is tumbled may alternatively be employed. The preferred temperature of operation is 500 to 600 DEG C. The alkali metal hydroxide used preferably contains less than 50% of water: anhydrous alkali metal hydroxides can be used and also more dilute alkali metal hydroxides, but in the latter case some of the water has to be evaporated. Alkali metals referred to are sodium, potassium and lithium. Specification 885,061 is referred to.
