Abstract

A method of recovering cryolite from the carbonaceous inner lining of an electrolytic cell used in aluminum electrolytic refining, which comprises reacting the interior lining material of the cryolite-containing cell with added water-soluble carbonate selected from the group consisting of sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate at an elevated temperature and for a period of time sufficient for substantially all of the cryolite to react with said carbonate with the resulting formation of sodium fluoride and sodium aluminate in accordance with the chemical equation Na3AlF6 + 2Na2CO3 → 6 NaF + NaAlO2 + 2CO2 contacting the resulting reaction mixture, which contains sodium fluoride and sodium aluminate, with an aqueous solution to dissolve said sodium fluoride and said sodium aluminate therefrom and react the resulting aqueous solution with carbon dioxide to precipitate cryolite therefrom.
