Abstract

Rigid moulded aluminothermic compositions are produced from mixtures containing finely divided aluminium, an amount of oxidizing agent, including alkali nitrate, well below the amount necessary to react with the aluminium to oxidise it completely, 0.2-10 per cent of a fluoride, and water, by moulding the mixtures to shape and applying to the shaped compositions a small amount of a strongly alkaline solution, e.g. a solution of alkali hydroxide, carbonate or aluminate. If applied to one or a few points only of the shaped compositions an exothermic reaction occurs which spreads throughout the shapes to dry them completely. Examples of suitable compositions are given containing fireclay grog, millscale, aluminium of different particle sizes, sodium nitrate and cryolite or fluorspar.
