Abstract

An exothermic mixture comprises aluminium, an amount of oxidizing agent well below that needed to completely oxidize the aluminium, 1-10 per cent by weight of a fluoride to facilitate burning of the aluminium and lowering the temperature at which reaction starts, and a small quantity of alkali aluminate sufficient when moistened to set up a reaction with the free aluminium in the mixture. When the mixture is moulded with water into a sleeve or other shape, sufficient heat is generated to dry off the mixture and render the sleeve &c. self-drying. The alkali aluminate may be sodium aluminate in an amount between 0.5 and 1.5 per cent by weight of the mixture, and it may be added to the mixture before moistening or to the water used for moulding. The time delay before the self-drying action commences may be increased by the addition of small quantities of an acidic material such as boric acid, or according to the Provisional Specification, of base metals e.g. up to 5 per cent magnesium powder, with or without 0.01-0.25 per cent of salts of noble metals, e.g. copper sulphate. Specification 627,678 is referred to.
