Abstract
Beryllium fluoride which flows easily at its melting point is prepared by heating beryllium oxide with 100 to 120% of the stoichiometric amount of ammonium bifluoride in the presence of water in an amount of approximately 1/3 of the weight of beryllium oxide and then heating the reaction product at above 600 DEG C. in the presence of sodium chloride or magnesium fluoride. The sodium chloride or magnesium fluoride may be added to the beryllium fluoride after formation, or to the reactants when the latter are mixed together. Magnesium fluoride, if used, may be in the form of a mixture containing beryllium fluoride obtained by reducing beryllium fluoride with magnesium. The temperature for the reaction may be 700 to 750 DEG C. and this may be subsequently raised to 800 to 850 DEG C. Suitable proportions of the added salt per hundred pounds of beryllium fluoride are fifteen pounds of sodium chloride or twenty pounds of magnesium fluoride.
