Abstract
Trichlorocyanuric acid is made by adding an aqueous solution of "alkali meatal cyanurate" to a cold aqueous solution of chlorine maintaining the resulting mixture at 0 DEG -25 DEG C. and ensuring that the amount of chlorine present is in storchiometric excess over the amount required to convert the added alkali metal cyanurate to trichlorocyanuric acid. Preferably the reaction is carried out at a temperature between 0 DEG and 10 DEG C. "Alkali metal cyanurate" is defined as cyanuric acid, the three hydrogen atoms of which have been replaced by alkali metal atoms. Sufficient alkali metal hydroxide may be present in the reaction mixture to maintain dissolution of the alkali metal cyanurate. Lithium sodium and potassium are specified alkali metals. Chlorine may be passed into the mixture at a rate in excess of the rate required to saturate the mixture with chlorine.ALSO:Trichlorocyanuric acid is made by adding an aqueous solution of "alkali metal cyanurate" to a cold aqueous solution of chlorine, maintaining the resulting mixture at 0 DEG C.-25 DEG C. and ensuring that the amount of chlorine present is in stoichiometric excess over the amount required to convert the added alkali metal cyanurate to trichlorocyanuric acid. "Alkali metal cyanurate" is defined as cyanuric acid, the three hydrogen atoms of which have been replaced by alkali metal atoms. Sufficient alkali metal hydroxide may be present in the reaction mixture to maintain p dissolution of the alkali metal cyanurate. Lithium, sodium and potassium are specified alkali metals. Trichlorocyanuric acid may be used as a chlorinating agent for unsaturated organic compounds.
