Abstract
1-Halo-1-nitroalkanes are prepared by halogenating in aqueous solution an alkali metal nitronate salt of the formula <FORM:1011116/C2/1> wherein R is an alkyl group containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms and M is an alkali metal, the pH of the reaction system being maintained from 5.5 to 6.5. The halogen may be chlorine, bromine or iodine. The alkali metal nitronates may be prepared by reacting a 1-nitroalkane with an alkali metal base. Examples are given. A comparative example describes a similar process in which the pH is maintained in the range of 7.4 to 7.7. In Example 2, the reaction of sodium ethanenitronate with chlorine to give 1-chloro-1-nitroethane also yields, as by-products, nitromethane, nitroethane, 2-nitropropane, 1,1 -dichloro-1-nitroethane and 2-chloro-2-nitropropane.
