Abstract

A process for the production of gem-dinitro-alcohols or gem-dinitro-alkanes comprises reacting a 1-halo-1-nitro-alkane with an alkali metal nitrite salt and a base in the presence of water to form a slurry, diluting the slurry with water to form a solution, extracting said solution with an organic solvent, reacting the aqueous layer obtained from said extraction step with (1) a mixture of an aldehyde and an acid, or (2) an acid alone to form in aqueous medium a product consisting of 2,2-dinitroalcohol or 1,1-dinitroalkane, respectively, extracting said aqueous medium with an organic solvent, and treating the solvent extract to remove the solvent. The acid is preferably a mineral acid and the aldehyde is preferably formaldehyde. Examples are given. In Example 3, the 2,2-dinitropropanol product is treated with methanolic potassium hydroxide to give potassium 1-nitro-1-ethanenitronate. The Specification also contains the subject-matter of Specifications 931,565, 999,066 and 1,011,116.
