Abstract

Trimethylol-alkanes are extracted from aqueous reaction mixtures which essentially comprise trimethylol-alkane and a metallic formate by dissolving in the mixture sodium chloride or an obvious chemical equivalent and extracting the trimethylol-alkane by means of an organic solvent miscible in all proportions with water so as to obtain an upper organic layer comprising practically the whole of the trimethylol alkane and a lower aqueous layer comprising the metallic formate and the sodium chloride or chemical equivalent. If necessary the aqueous solutions may be partially concentrated before use. The preferred solvent is isopropanol. Examples are given of the separation of trimethylol propane from a solution obtained by reacting butyraldehyde with formaldehyde in the presence of caustic soda.
