Abstract
The separation of p-isopropylphenol from the m-isomer is effected by sulphonating the mixture with conc. H2SO4, extracting with benzene, and recovering the p-isomer from the organic phase by distilling off the benzene, allowing the residue to stand and separating the precipitate of pure p-isomer. The aqueous phase deposits crystals of sulphonated m-isopropylphenol, which are separated and hydrolysed with steam/H2SO4 to the phenol. Where the initial mixture contains also diisopropylphenol, its solution in aq. alkali is benzene-extracted to remove the latter, and the alkaline phase treated with strong acid to give the mixture to be sulphonated.
