Abstract

Vinyl chloride is produced from ethylene chloride by treating the latter with a methyl alcoholic solution of an inorganic agent capable of binding hydrochloric acid, for example, sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, or barium hydroxide. The methyl alcohol and unchanged ethylene chloride are readily recovered from the residues by adding a small quantity of water to dissolve the sodium chloride or the like formed in the reaction, and subjecting to fractional distillation. According to a modification, the methyl alcohol may be introduced gradually into a vessel containing ethylene chloride and caustic soda.
