Abstract

Cyclo-rubber is produced by reacting raw rubber with stannic chloride, and at least 4 mols. of alkali per mol. of stannic chloride. In an example, 35 grams of stannic chloride is added to 4.5 grams of rubber dissolved in 4.5 kgs. of boiling benzene. After 3 hours 22 grams of caustic soda is added in 5 kgs. of water and then steam passed in to remove the benzene, the cyclo-rubber floats on the water as a porous white mass. A moisture proof sheet material may be produced by mixing the cyclo-rubber with wax, liquid paraffin or petroleum, dissolving in naphtha and applying to the surface of a cellulose sheet.
