Abstract

In the process described in the parent Specification for converting slightly swellable bentonites such as calcium bentonites into highly swellable products, the replacement of the exchangeably combined cations by monovalent cations is effected by adding the reagent such as soda in the dry finely divided form to the pit-moist or moistened starting material and intimately mixing it therewith.
