Vandyke Brown and a substance, preferably soda, which counteracts its retarding effect, are dissolved in water to form a gauging solution for cement, concrete, &c. The liquid may also contain a dispersing agent, e.g. alcohol or sweet spirits of nitre, and also caustic soda.
