Abstract
A dry, stable, non-interreacting disinfectant composition consists essentially of a dry mixture of an anhydrous chlorine-containing compound, preferably in the proportion of 10 to 99.5 parts by weight, that is stable in the dry state and provides hypochlorite ions in aqueous solution, and an anhydrous, water-soluble alkali metal bromide, e.g. sodium bromide, preferably in the proportion of 90 to 0.5 parts by weight, which does not become hydrated when mixed with the chlorine-containing compound and which provides hypobromite ions in aqueous solution in the presence of hypochlorite ions. Specified chlorine containing compounds are calcium hypochlorite, p-toluenesulfonchloramide, chloromelamine, sodium benzenesulfonchloramine, chloramine T, chloramine B, and 1,3-dichloro-5,5-dimethylhydantoin.
