Abstract

A bleaching composition comprises a water soluble chlorine or oxygen bleach intimately mixed with a carrier composition comprising a mixture of sodium borate having a mole ratio of Na 2 O to B 2 O 3 of from 0.22 to 0.36, sodium sulphate and up to 20% by weight of water, including water of hydration. The preferred ratio of Na 2 O:B 2 O 3 :SO 3 is 1:4:1, and the preferred water content of the carrier is 8-20%. It is preferred that the carrier has a pore density of 0.1 to 1.2 g/ml. Suitable bleaches are chlorinated cyanuric acids e.g. trichloro-isocyanuric acid, dichloroisocyanuric acid and sodium and potassium dichloroisocyanurates, dimethyl-dichlorohydantoin, N- chlorosuccinimide, alkaline earth hypochlorites, alkali metal monopersulphates and perborates, and sodium hydrosulphite. The bleaching composition may be made into tablets and these may be coated with a water soluble soap, a synthetic organic detergent and/or a water conditioner e.g. by the method of Specification No. 993,583. Pigments and binders may also be included in the tablets.
