Abstract

Disintegrable detergent tablets for use in cleaning textiles in washing machines comprise an inner core consisting of a substantially dry solid bleach and an outer coating, contiguous with and completely enclosing the core, of a fabric washing agent which is compatible with the bleach, and which consists of a water-soluble soap, and/or synthetic organic detergent and/or a water conditioning complexing, sequestering or chelating agent. In general, the weight ratio of bleach to coating is 1: 1 to 1: 5. Suitable bleaches are di- and tri-chloroisocyanuric acids, sodium and potassium dichloroisocyanurate, dimethyldichlorohydantoin, N-chlorosuccinimide, alkali metal monopersulphates, perborates and hypochlorites, sodium hydrosulphite, alkaline earth metal hypochlorites and the borate-hypochlorite bleaches described in Specifications 863,288, 867,067 and 905,553. The inner core may also contain pigments, e.g. ultramarine blue, and binders. In addition to or in place of soap, the coating may contain such detergents as alkali metal, ammonium, amine or alkanolamine alkylbenzene sulphonates, N-acyl-N-alkyl taurates, alkyl and alkylphenol polyoxyethylene sulphates, alkyl sulphates and sulphonates, acyl isethionates, alkyl naphthalene sulphonates, alkyl-diphenyl and alkylphenylphenol sulphonates, dialkyl sulphosuccinates and trialkyl sulphotricarballylates and water conditioners such as ethylenediamine tetracetic acid and its salts, zeolites, and alkali metal carbonates, phosphates and polyphosphates. Other additives which may be present in the outer coating include borax, sodium bicarbonate, sulphate and silicate, carboxymethyl cellulose, fluorescent brighteners (many examples quoted), talc, gums, starches, dextrins, bacteriostats and bacteriocides such as trichlorocarbanilide and trichloro-and tribromo-salicylanilide, perfume such as lavender oil, colour, suds, stabilizers and suppressors, and preservatives. The tablets may be made by compacting the bleach and then encapsulating it with a coating, or by making the coating in two separate halves each containing a cavity and then placing the bleach in the cavity in the form of powder or a pre-compacted mass, the two halves then being brought together and pressed to the required shape.ALSO:Disintegrable detergent tablets for use in washing and bleaching textiles in washing machines comprise an inner core consisting of a substantially dry solid bleach and an outer coating, contiguous with and completely enclosing the core, of a fabric washing agents which is compatible with the bleach, and which contains a water soluble soap, and/or synthetic organic detergent, and/or a water conditioning complexing, sequestering or chelating agent. In general, the weight ratio of bleach to coating is 1 : 1 to 1 : 5. Suitable bleaches are di- and tri-chloroisocyanuric acids, sodium and potassium dichloroisocyanurate, dimethyldichlorohydantoin, N-chlorosuccinimide, alkali metal monopersulphates, perborates and hypochlorites, sodium hydrosulphite, alkaline earth metal hypochlorites and the borate-hypochlorite bleaches described in Specifications 863,288, 867,067 and 905,553. The inner core may also contain pigments, e.g. ultramarine blue, and binders. In addition to or in place of soap, the coating may contain such detergents as alkali metal, ammonium, amine or alkanolamine alkylbenzene sulphonates, N-oxcyl-N-alkyl taurates, alkyl and alkylphenol poly-oxyethylene sulphates, alkyl sulphates and sulphonates, acyl isethionates, alkyl napthalene sulphonates, alkyldiphenyl and alkylphenylphenol sulphonates, dialkyl sulphosuccinates, and trialkyl sulphotricarballylates, and water conditioners such as ethylenediamine tetracitic acid and its salts, zeolites and alkali metal carbonates, phosphates and polyphosphates. Other additives which may be present in the outer coating include borax, sodium bicarbonate, sulphate and silicate, carboxymethyl cellulose, fluorescent brighteners (many examples quoted), talc, gums, starches, dextrins, bacteriostats and bacteriocides such as trichlorocarbanilide carbanilide and trichloro- and tribromo-salicylanilide, perfume such as lavender oil, colour, suds stabilizers and suppressors, and preservatives. The tablets may be made by compacting the bleach and then encapsulating it with a coating, or by making the coating in two separate halves each containing a cavity and then placing the bleach in the cavity in the form of a powder or a pre-compacted mass, the two halves then being brought together and pressed to the required shape.
