Abstract
A composition suitable for washing and bleaching textile materials comprises (1) a dry-water-soluble compound which on contact with water liberates hypochlorite ions, (2) ultra-marine blue, (3) a substantive to textile fibres and fluorescent brightener stable in the presence of the hypochlorite liberating compound, and (4) a water-soluble organic surface active agent. Suitable hypochlorite-liberating compounds are trichlorocyanuric acid, dichlorocyanuric acid and salts thereof, N chlorosuccinimide, N-chloromalonimide, N - chlorophthalimide, N-chloronaphthalimide, 1,3 dichloro 5,5 dimethyl hydantoin, 1-monochloro-5,5 dimethyl hydantoin, 1,3 di chloro-5-methyl-5-iso-butyl hydantoin, 1,3 dichloro - 5 methyl - 5 - ethyl hydantoin, 1,3 dichloro - 5, 5 - di isobutyl hydantoin, 1,3 dichloro - 5 - methyl - 5 - n - amyl hydantoin, trichlormelamine, lithium hypochlorite and calcium hypochlorite. The fluorescent brightener may be a triazole, e.g. <FORM:0954736/C3/1> or a sulphonated 3,7 diamino dibenzothiophene dioxide e.g. <FORM:0954736/C3/2> The organic surface active agent may be an anionic detergent salt having an alkyl group of 8-22 carbon atoms, e.g. a higher fatty acid alkali metal soap such as sodium myristate or palmitate, a sulphated or sulphonated anionic alkali or alkaline earth metal detergent salt containing an alkyl group containing 8-22 carbon atoms, e.g. sodium dodecyl benzene sulphonate, magnesium tridecyl benzene sulphonate or lithium or potassium pentepropylene benzene sulphonate, an alkali metal salt of a higher alkyl naphthalene sulphonic acid, a sulphated higher fatty acid monoglyceride, an alkali metal salt of a sulphated fatty alcohol containing 10-18 carbon atoms, an alkali metal salt of a higher fatty acid ester of a low molecular weight alkylol sulphonic acid, a fatty ethanolamide, a fatty acid amide of an amino-alkl sulphonic acid, sodium toluene sulphonate, sodium xylene sulphonate, sodium naphthalene sulphonate, sodium N-lauryl betaalanine or cetyl pyridinium chloride. The composition may also contain inorganic salts, e.g. sodium sulphate, sodium chloride, sodium carbonate, borax, sodium silicate, mono sodium phosphate, trisodium phosphate, tetra sodium pyrophosphate, pentasodium tripoly-phosphate and sodium bisulphate, organic sequestrants, e.g. ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid and its salts, sodium carboxy methyl cellulose, citric acid, resins, e.g. polyvinyl pyrrolidone and poly acrylates, starch, urea, perfumes, limonene, mineral oil, corrosion inhibitors and colouring matter. The composition in powder form may be packaged in a sealed envelope of water-soluble polyvinyl alcohol film which may be introduced directly into the solution containing the materials to be washed and bleached.ALSO:A composition suitable for bleaching textile materials, e.g cotton, comprises (1) a dry water-soluble compound which on contact with water liberates hypochlorite ions, (2) ultramarine blue and (3) a fluorescent brightener substantive to textile fibres and stable in the presence of the hypochlorite liberating compound. Suitable hypochlorite liberating compounds are trichlorocyanuric acid, dichlorocyanuric acid and salts thereof, N-chlorosuccinimide, N-chloromalonimide, N-chlorophthalimide, N-chloronaphthalimide, 1, 3 dichloro 5, 5 dimethyl hydantoin, 1-monochloro-5, 5 dimethyl hydantoin, 1, 3 dichloro-5-methyl-5-iso-butyl hydantoin, 1, 3 dichloro-5 methyl-5-ethyl hydantoin, 1, 3 dichloro-5, 5-di isobutyl hydantoin, 1, 3 dichloro-5-methyl-5-n-amyl hydantoin, trichlormelamine, lithium hypochlorite and calcium hypochlorite. The fluorescent brightener may be a triazole, e.g. <FORM:0954736/D1-D2/1> or a sulphonated 3, 7 diamino dibenzothiophene dioxide e.g. <FORM:0954736/D1-D2/2> The composition may also contain an anionic, ampholytic or cationic detergent, numerous examples of which are given, inorganic salts, e.g. sodium sulphate, sodium chloride, sodium carbonate, borax, sodium silicate, mono sodium phosphate, trisodium phosphate, tetra sodium pyrophosphate, pentasodium tripolyphosphate and sodium bisulphate, organic sequestrants, e.g. ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid and its salts, sodium carboxy methyl cellulose, citric acid, resins, e.g. polyvinyl pyrrolidone and poly acrylates, starch, urea, perfumes, limonene, mineral oil, corrosion inhibitors and colouring matter. The composition may be packaged in a sealed envelope of water-soluble polyvinyl alcohol film which may be introduced directly into the solution containing the materials to be bleached.
