STERILIZING TABLET.
APPLIOATION FILED 1111.2. 1904.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 19, 1907.
Application filed January 2| 1904. Serial No. 187.564.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ViNcENT BLUMHARDT NEsFiELD, physician and surgeon, lieutenant Indian Medical Service, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 2 Madeley road,7 Ealing, in the county of London, England, have invented certain new and useful Iniprovements in Sterilizing-Tablets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention consists of a tablet for the sterilization of water and other liquids, and of aliinentary substances, to render the same potable or edible.
It has been designed particularly for the sterilization of contaminated Water, quickly, eliciently and without filtration, although it in ay be used in conjunction with filtration if desired. The active agent in this sterilization is nascent chlorin which is set free as the tablet dissolves, and is afterwards neutralized by the action of the material contained in the center of the tablet.
In the accompanying drawing the figure represents in cross section one of my iinproved tablets.
The core of this tablet is 'composed of sodium sulfite around which is placed a layer of gelatin. Around the gelatin layer is located a layer composed of bleachingpowder and tartaric acid powder mixed together and the whole is inclosed in a readily soluble coating, such as sugar. When this tablet is placed in bleaching the Water the sugar coating readily dissolves, and then the tartaric acid acts upon the powder, setting free nascent chlorin, which sterilizes the water. As the tablet still further dissolves the layer of gelatin gradually disappears, and when the sodium suliite is dissolved it neutralizes whatever chlorin there may be in the water or other substance treated, forming common salt.
Having thus described my invention wh at I claim as new andv desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statesis I. A sterilizing tablet composed of an outer protective coating, a laver of two substances, Which, when dissolved, will react upon each other and evolve chlorin, a core, containing a neutralizing agent for said chlorin, and a soluble layer separating the two last naine-d con'iponents, substantiallyY as described.
2. A sterilizing tablet composed of an outer coating of sugar, a layer of bleaching powder and tartaric acid, a layer of gelatin inside of said first named layer, and a core ol' sodium sullite, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my' hand in presence of two Witnesses.
