Abstract

Tertiary phosphine oxides of formula RR1R11P-->O where R is C10- 8 alkyl, alkenyl or monohydroxyalkyl, and R1 and R11 are C1- 3 alkyl or monohydroxyalkyl, are prepared by reacting a Grignard reagent or reagents with a halophosphine or halophosphine oxide containing the radical R and if necessary oxidizing the resulting phosphine derivative to the phosphine oxide, e.g. with hydrogen peroxide. R may be derived from a mixture of groups. Tertiary phosphine oxides of the above type other than those in which R is 1,2-alkenyl are claimed per se. The products are used in detergent compositions (see Division C5). Dodecyldichlorophosphine is prepared by the action of PCl3 on an ethereal solution of didodecylcadmium obtained by adding cadmium chloride to dodecyl magnesium bromide. Dodecane-, tetradecane- and octadecane-phosphonyl dichlorides are obtained by the action of PCl5 on the appropriate alkanephosphonic acid obtained by hydrolysis with HBr of the dibutyl esters, prepared from dibutyl phosphite and the appropriate alkyl bromide.ALSO:A detergent composition comprises from 5 to 80% by weight of a tertiary phosphine oxide RR1R11P-->O where R is C10- 18 alkyl, alkenyl or monohydroxyalkyl, and R1 and R11 are C1- 3 alkyl or monohydroxyalkyl, and from 95 to 20% by weight of anionic organic detergent, nonionic organic detergent, water soluble inorganic alkaline builder salt, organic sequestering agent or a mixture of any of these. The composition may be in bar, granular, powder or aqueous solution form. Anionic detergents, any of which may be used in the form of sodium, potassium, ammonium and alkylolammonium salts, include soaps, alkyl glyceryl ether sulphonates, alkylsulphates, alkyl monoglyceride sulphates or sulphonates, polyethylene glycol monalkyl ether sulphates, acyl sarcosinates, acyl isethionates, acyl N-methyl taurides, alkylbenzene sulphonates, alkylphenol polyethenoxy sulphonates. Nonionic detergents include ethylene oxide condensates of alkylphenols, of propylene oxideethylenediamine condensates and of C8- 18 alcohols, and C10- 18 alkyl di-(C1- 2 alkyl) amine oxides. Builders include alkali metal carbonates, borates, phosphates, polyphosphates, bicarbonates and silicates. Sequestering agents include alkali metal ethylenediamine tetraacetates, N-(2-hydroxyethyl) ethylenediamine triacetates, nitrilo triacetates, N-(2 - hydroxyethyl) - nitrilo diacetates, and phytates. Other substances which may be present include sodium sulphate, tallow fatty acid, corn starch, silica flour and carboxymethylhydroxyethyl cellulose.
