1468856 Greying inhibitors in detergents CHEMISCHE WERKE HULS AG 14 June 1974 [15 June 1973] 26441/74 Heading C5D A washing or cleansing composition contains phosphate, a detergent component and, as a greying inhibitor, a mixture of (A) 30-95% by wt. based on the total mixture, of one or more carboxymethyl polyglycol ethers of the formula in which n is an integer from 9 to 20 and m is n/2À7 to n/1À7 and M denotes an alkali metal or NH 4 and (B) 5 to 70% by wt., based on the total mixture, of one or more alkyl polyglycol ethers of the formula wherein n and m have the above mentioned meaning. The alcohols used in the preparation of components (A) and (B) are fatty alcohols of C 9 to C 20 and especially C 12 -C 18 , which are straight or branched chain, saturated or unsaturated, synthetic or natural, e.g. coconut or tallow fatty alcohols. The polyglycol ethers contain 3 to 11 mols of ethylene oxide per mole of fatty alcohol. Preferred are C 12 -C 18 fatty alcohols condensed with 4À5 to 6 mols of ethylene oxide. The mixtures (A) and (B) are produced by reacting the polyglycol ethers with less than an equimolar amount of an alkali metal chloroacetate so that part of the alkyl polyglycol ether remains unconverted to carboxymethylether polyglycol ether. The greying inhibitor is used in quantities of 1 to 5% of the washing or cleansing composition and may be used in admixture with conventional greying inhibitors. A typical composition contains sodium C 10 -C 13 alkylbenzene sulphonate, C 16 - C 18 fatty alcohol + 25 mols ethylene oxide, soap, pentasodium triphosphate, tetrasodium diphosphate, sodium metasilicate, sodium perborate tetrahydrate, sodium sulphate, greying inhibitor and water.
