Abstract

1385131 Detergents containing polymeric builders ICI AMERICA Inc 12 Jan 1973 [18 Feb 1972] 1770/73 Heading C5D A detergent composition for cleansing and laundering operations comprises an organic water-soluble detergent surfactant and, as polymeric builder, a water-soluble salt of a maleic acid-vinyl alcohol copolymer, derived from a prepolymer in which vinyl acetate is the precursor for the vinyl alcohol moiety. The salt of the copolymer may be an alkali metal, ammonium or substituted ammonium salt. The copolymer has a molecular weight of 500 to 50,000 and a ratio of maleic acid to vinyl alcohol of 2 : 3 to 3 : 2. The copolymers are prepared by the hydrolysis of a maleic anhydridevinyl acetate copolymer by means of an alkali metal hydroxide or NH 4 OH and the builder also contains an acetate, e.g. sodium acetate produced by the hydrolysis step. The surfactant may be anionic, non-ionic, zwitterionic, ampholytic and mixtures thereof. Detergent compositions in liquid or powder form contains (A) 3-35% by wt. of detergent surfactant (B) 5-60% wt. of copolymer builder (C) 0-2% carboxymethyl cellulose (D) 5-20% alkali metal silicate (E) 0-60% alkali metal sulphate (F) 0-10% bleaching agent.
